Transgression is one of the forms of transcendance. A transcendance whose ultimate aim is the convergence of all phenomena — of the entire phenomenal reality — into a singularity, nowadays promoted as the pinnacle of technological achievement, but nothing but a perverted reflection of the real — advaitic — unity of all reality, Brahman, the one without a second, whose essential qualities are sat सत — being, cit चित — consciousness, and ānanda आनन्द— bliss — saccidānanda सच्चिदानन्द।
With regard to transgressions, Bataille paints a very realistic picture of the potential of transgressive behaviour. First it is a break through the limits of moral and ethical boundaries, something soldiers experience in war. They operate on a different level, in a different dimension, in a different ethical and moral space, for the transgressions they commit are part of their military duty, sanctioned by the laws of war, and are therefore — socially speaking —free of guilt.
This is how Bataille describes it:
« L’esprit humain, est exposé aux plus surprenantes injonctions. Sans cesse, il a peur de lui-même. Ses mouvements érotiques le terrifient. La sainte se détourne avec effroi du voluptueux : elle ignore l’unité des passions inavouables de ce dernier et des siennes propres.
Cependant il est possible de chercher la cohésion de l’esprit humain, dont les possibilités s’étendent de la sainte au voluptueux.
Je me place en un tel point de vue que j’aperçois ces possibilités opposées se coordonnant. Je ne tente pas de les réduire les unes aux autres, mais je m’efforce de saisir, au-delà de chaque possibilité négatrice de l’autre, une ultime possibilité de convergence. »
